In the summer term of 1954, Queen's recorded a remarkable win against King's College. The latter scored 201 runs due, in large measure, to the excellent battling of A. Elliot and B. Greatorex. Queen's were given two hours to overhaul this total - an unlikely outcome.
However, the 1st XI proved equal to the challenge. Not only did they hit 202 runs, they did so with 22 minutes and nine wickets to spare. The 50 was reached in 35 minutes, the century in 58 minutes, 150 in 75 minutes and the 200 in 98 minutes. This achievement was mainly due to the magnificent batting of Richard Fidler and Bryan Palmer. As the score card shows, they amassed 159 between them. The picture of the score box, in use for the fist season, confirms the outcome.
When Richard and his wife, Jennifer, visited the school in August 2017 he recounted the story of the match. A special memory for him was the reaction of Dapper Channon to the win. After Richard hit the winning run, with both batsmen walking from the field, Channon could not contain his enthusiasm and rushed onto the field to shake their hands before they reached the pavillion. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the two players ended the season top of the batting averages, Bryan with 40.8 and Richard with 36.5.
Both batsmen feature in the team photo of the 1st XI, appropriately sitting either side of the captain, D. Reed.
