Once a Queenian,
always a Queenian

For Old Queenians, Queen’s is far more than a place of education - it is a lifelong connection.

It lives in memories of classrooms and corridors, House spirit, friendships formed on the sports fields, performances, and moments that helped shape who you are today.

Long after leaving Taunton, many Old Queenians continue to follow the life of the College with pride and affection. A gift in your Will is a deeply personal way to honour that enduring.

bond and ensure that the Queen’s experience continues to inspire and transform young lives for generations to come.

Your legacy can transform the lives of future Queenians

Legacy gifts play a vital role in supporting bursaries at Queen’s College, opening the door to a life-changing education for pupils who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend.

By remembering Queen’s in your Will, you are investing in the potential of future Queenians - enabling talented young people to benefit from the same enriching education, opportunities and community that you experienced.

  • Transformational bursaries

  • Life-changing educational opportunities

  • A lasting impact across generations

Just 1% can change a life

We fully understand that your family and loved ones come first in your Will. Many Old Queenians choose to leave just a small percentage of their estate to Queen’s - often as little as 1%.

This simple and thoughtful gesture can have a profound and lasting impact, while ensuring that the vast majority of your estate remains with those closest to you.

A legacy gift may also enable you to make a contribution that you would not be able to consider during your lifetime, creating a meaningful and enduring way to give back to a place that has played such an important role in your story.

A lifelong connection to Queen's

Robert Prentice (OQ 1947)

“My dad’s parents were Headmaster and Headmistress of the Junior School between 1936 and 1958, so he grew up immersed in the life of Queen’s and remained deeply connected to the College after he left in 1947.

Each summer, on our way to Devon, we would stop at the school to use the swimming pool - in those days, the keys were simply left on the wall for Old Queenians. Later in life, I brought him back to Taunton for cricket days and school events, which he loved being part of.

Queen’s always meant a great deal to him. He was a lifelong supporter and made many donations over the years, so it was no surprise to us that he chose to leave a gift in his Will to the College.

I’m delighted he was able to pass some of his estate to something that meant so much to him.”

How to remember Queen's in your Will

Leaving a gift to Queen’s College in your Will is straightforward and can be arranged when making or updating your Will with your solicitor or financial advisor.

All you need to do is include the details of the Queen’s College Taunton Foundation when outlining your wishes.

Queen’s College Taunton Foundation
Registered Charity Number: 1093852

A percentage of your estate
The most common and flexible way to leave a legacy gift.

A fixed sum
A specific amount of money gifted to the Foundation.

A residuary gift
A share of your estate after loved ones and other commitments are provided for.

A thoughtful and tax-efficient way to give

Leaving a gift to charity in your Will can also be a tax-efficient way to give. If you leave 10% or more of your estate to charity, the rate of inheritance tax on your estate may be reduced from 40% to 36%.

This means your legacy gift to Queen’s could make an even greater impact, while potentially reducing the overall tax burden on your estate.

Queen’s College is not a financial or legal advisor, and we strongly encourage you to seek qualified professional advice when making or updating your Will.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make sure my loved ones are looked after?
We fully understand that your family and loved ones come first in your will. Leaving even a small percentage of your estate to the Queen’s College Taunton Foundation can make a real impact - and leaves the majority of your estate for those closest to you. Did you know that if you leave 10% of your estate to charity, inheritance tax due is reduced from 40% to 36%?
Why should I remember Queen’s College Taunton in my will?
For many, leaving a gift in their will is their way of showing support to the School. A Queen’s College education helped shape the trajectory of many OQs’ lives, especially those who received financial support to attend the School. A gift in your will ensures today’s pupils benefit from those same opportunities whilst enriching the School’s intellectual and social diversity. It is an investment in future Queenians and an opportunity to give back to your old School.
How do I remember Queen’s College Taunton in my will?
Simply tell your Solicitor/Will-maker that you would like to remember Queen’s College Taunton Foundation in your will and give them our Registered Charity Number (1093852).
I already have a will - how do I include Queen’s College Taunton?
Ask your Solicitor about adding a ‘Letter of Wishes’ or a Codicil to your will. They’ll need the Queen’s College Taunton Foundation Registered Charity Number.
Why is it better to leave a percentage of my estate to Queen’s College as opposed to a fixed sum?
Possessions (specific gifts) and fixed sums (pecuniary gifts) are paid out from your estate first. A fixed sum might feel appropriate at the time of making the will, but (hopefully) many years later, it may not have the intended impact due to rising costs and inflation. Leaving a percentage of your estate to Queen’s College Taunton Foundation will ensure your gift keeps up with rising costs over time.
What difference will my gift make?
For the 2024-25 academic year, senior school fees are £27,360 and a gift of any size towards our bursary fund helps to transform the lives of the recipients. Examples:
  • A gift of £53,106 could fund one pupil through Sixth Form.
  • A gift of £273,202 could fund one pupil through seven years of Senior School.
  • A gift of £500,000 (invested and returning around 5%/£25k per annum) would effectively fund a significant bursary in perpetuity.
All legacy gifts received will be used to support bursaries, unless you stipulate otherwise.
Do I have to tell Queen’s College Taunton Foundation if I have remembered the School in my will?
We understand that making a will is a deeply personal matter and you are under no obligation to inform us if you have remembered the School in your will - however we would be delighted should you choose to do so. If the School is aware of your decision, it enables us to share the current successes and progress at Queen’s College Taunton with you, as well as to thank you during your lifetime. You can inform us discreetly by email or by completing the pledge form.
What are the inheritance tax benefits of leaving a legacy to Queen’s College Taunton Foundation?
Under current rules (February 2025) if you choose to leave 10% of your estate to Queen’s College Taunton Foundation, then inheritance tax liability reduces from 40% to 36%.
